What exactly is a SMSF?

A Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) is a superannuation fund that complies with section 17A of the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993 (Cth) (SIS Act). In order to remain a complying fund a SMSF must satisfy the following three tests.
